Join us at The Newberry Museum for a presentation on Dr. Spencer Glasgow Welch, Surgeon for the South Carolina 13th Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, presented by Mr. John Favors.
Dr. Welch, a native of Newberry, enlisted as a Private in Company D, 13th South Carolina Volunteers Infantry Regiment at the Newberry Court House on August 23, 1861. After being examined and certified as a qualified medical professional, he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon, Field and Staff, of the regiment. Dr. Welch’s experiences throughout the Civil War, his parole at Appomattox Court House in April of 1865, and his three-week journey from Virginia to his home in Newberry, are documented in the publication A Confederate Surgeon’s Letters to His Wife.
The presentation will be held on Saturday, July 6 with two available times, 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
