Special Presentation by David Price, Executive Director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine
NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry Museum is pleased to announce a special presentation by David Price, Executive Director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine from Frederick, Maryland. The presentation entitled, “Civil War Medicine: It’s Not What You Think,” will be held on, Wednesday, July 24 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Price will discuss the truths behind the most common misconceptions about Civil War medicine, and how the innovations of Civil War medicine paved the way for our modern emergency medical system.
“Civil War Medicine is not what you think. Most people imagine biting of bullets, screams of agony and Doctors who were untrained - hacking off limbs at random. Nothing could be further from the truth. Preparations for the Civil War focused on recruitment and the build up of arms. Very little was done to prepare for mass casualties. The systems that were developed to care for the wounded as war erupted are the basis of military and civilian medicine today. Be it battlefield medicine around the world or the response to natural disasters and mass casualty events – you are witnessing the systems that were born out of the American Civil War. Civil War medicine continues to saves lives to this day.” – David Price
This presentation is part of the Museum’s current temporary exhibit, The Toll of War, a traveling exhibit from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
Museum admission and presentation is FREE to the public. Please RSVP by calling the museum at 803-597-5215 to reserve a seat. The museum is located at 1300 Friend Street, Newberry, South Carolina.
